OUT AND ABOUT
GUEST STAR PREVIEW WITH JOHN GOSDEN, WHO WELCOMES JOHN (the greatest jockey) FRANCOME, BRINGING US TO HIS HOME AND HIS HORSES. PREP READY FOR THE EXCITING CHALLENGES OVER THIS WEEKENDS RACING. A DELIGHT.

JOHN GOSDEN bloodhorse literate a professional licenced flat race trainer, horseman of the highest caliber. One of the best this world has ever seen. John’s father, Towser Gosden, was a renowned horseman and trainer of racehorses.

John never considered an alternative career. He describes training racehorses as something that was ‘in the blood’ and a career that he naturally progressed into.

He first began training in the USA and enjoyed much success between the years of 1980 and 1988. He then returned to England to continue his career under a British license.

The fastest horse John ever trained was Oasis Dream. The horse had several Group 1 wins, including the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes and the Darley July Cup, both at Newmarket in 2003.

John’s favourite horse is Ryafan. After a successful early career in Ireland, the horse went to America to campaign in 1997, where he won three top-class races in succession.

These were: the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Santa Anita, the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park and the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

John has trained many awkward horses and says, “like people, many horses have mental problems”. It is the trainer’s job to get the horse mentally, as well as physically, fit for racing.

John’s favourite memories are winning the 1983 Santa Anita Handicap in America and winning the 1997 Vodafone Derby with Benny The Dip.
His most recent Classic win was the 2007 St. Leger Stakes with Lucarno

2008 was a fantastic year for Gosden as he won the QEII Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic with Raven's Pass, as well as well as the Fillies Mile with Rainbow View, and trained nearly 100 winners. His good form
continued in 2009 with 4 Group 1 victories in the year.

Those whom he respects most within the racing industry are former champion trainers Sir Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. John was assistant trainer to both before he began training racehorses in his own name.

Other Hobbies and Interests

John is a keen follower of a range of other sports including rugby, cricket, football, polo and skiing. He particularly enjoys skiing.
John supports Ipswich Town and Blackheath football teams.

His star-sign is Aries.

He enjoys listening to classical music by Mozart and Verdi, as well as songs by Bob Dylan and Bruce Springstein.
His favourite film is ‘Citizen Kane’.
If he were not so busy racing, John would like to dedicate more time to wildlife conservation.

John has great admiration for Nelson Mandela.
He describes his only bad habit as a tendency to suffer from the anxiety of training horses!
